Hippocratic Morals: Traditional vs. Modern

What’s the difference between the,

"Old" Hippocratic Method and

the "New"?

 Old, traditional “Holistic” Hippocratic Method:

An Hippocratic physician of old or holistic health practitioner sees his duty as an educator and a facilitator. The practitioner took in consideration the feelings and emotions of the patient while making sure of their best interest on healing took place, without harm.

The holistic health practitioner feels that the body can heal itself, and it doesn't necessarily need outside influences of harsh drugs and surgery to heal from an illness or to prevent sickness; nature will provide health, through healthy foods, fresh water, air, sun, rest and exercise. In holistic health, the patient is an active participant and treated as a whole not just a disease.

The New “Modern” Hippocratic Method:

A Western doctor, or MD, sees his duty as treating a disease not a person, diagnosing it, and treating it, using heavy medication and surgery. Usually the patient has no say on the procedures, and just has to listen to the advice given by the doctor.

Why are people of today, seeking the physician who practices, Hippocratic method of old, or also know as holistic methods?

“Some people believe, doctors gain satisfaction not by making patients better or relieving their discomfort but by playing a series of intellectual games in which the collecting and analysis of test results is regarded as far more important than the support and comfort of a patient. Often patients are over-investigated, over diagnosed, over treated and under cared for.”
 (Coleman 2012)

“Most patients assume, a doctor proposes to use a known treatment to heal a disease which has been tested, examined and proven, before the doctor uses it. The real truth is that most medical research is organized, paid for, commissioned or subsidized by the drug industry (and the food, tobacco and alcohol industries). This type of research is designed to find evidence to prove a new product is of commercial value. Companies, which commission such research, are not worried about evidence; what they are looking for are conclusions which will enable them to sell their product. Drug company sponsored research is done more to get good reviews than to find out the truth.” ( Coleman 2012)

“If prescription or Over The Counter drugs are so good for people, where are all the healthy medicated customers? The truth is, there aren't, any.” (Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/139585)

“Patients are more willing to take personal responsibility in making important medical decisions when their doctors give them the opportunity to consider other options.” http://www.naturalnews.com/027700_alternative_medicine_patients.html#ixzz1tk8zAN2W

“Shared decision making (SDM) is a term used by holistic practitioners, to describe the interaction in which both parties exchange information and decide jointly which course of treatment to take. SDM has been shown in prior studies to help lower the number of high-risk treatments given to patients.” http://www.naturalnews.com/027700_alternative_medicine_patients.html#ixzz1tk8zAN2W

Rather than doctors simply prescribing a potentially dangerous therapy with no questions asked, patients should be encouraged to participate in making these important medical decisions. Dr. Frankael believes that in doing so, the number of risky procedures undertaken will be greatly reduced. http://www.naturalnews.com/027700_alternative_medicine_patients.html#ixzz1tk9Bc4ED
